7 Must-Haves for a Successful Family Red Eye Flight

When it comes to family travel, taking a red eye flight can be a great way to save time and money. But for a successful family red eye flight, there are certain items that are essential. In this blog post, we'll be discussing the 7 must-haves that will ensure your family has a pleasant and stress-free red eye flight.

1) A neck pillow

No red-eye flight is complete without a comfortable neck pillow. While you may be tempted to just use the plane pillows, they rarely provide the support needed for a long-haul flight. Having a neck pillow that fits snugly and comfortably can make all the difference in how well you rest during your flight.

I am a huge fan of the BCozzy Neck Pillows. They come in several different adult sizes and lots of kids' sizes, shapes and colors. The design of these pillows supports the head, neck and chin, all at once. There's an adjustable strap so you can find the perfect fit and they come with a pouch so you can pack it away easily when you're done. Best of all, they are machine washable, so they stay nice and clean throughout your travels.

2) A cozy blanket

When packing for a red eye flight, be sure to include a cozy blanket. This will be especially comforting for younger kids who may feel more anxious during their travels. Not only will the blanket keep them warm and cozy on the plane, it will also make them feel like they’re at home, as a reminder of their own beds. Choose a soft material that won’t irritate skin or bunch up too much when bunched together in the seat. You can also look for special travel blankets that come with a carrying pouch, so they can easily fit into your carry-on bag without taking up too much space.

If you're looking for some cozy kid's blanket recommendations, I suggest Morning Bird or Franco Dreams. Both brands offer lightweight, soft blankets in various fun colors and patterns for kids. With these blankets, you can rest assured that the kids will be comfortable and content during their red-eye flight.

3) An eye mask

If you are traveling with kids, an eye mask is essential. Eye masks are great for blocking out the light, especially if you’re trying to get some rest on a red-eye flight. Kids in particular need their rest, so having an eye mask can help ensure they get some much-needed shut-eye.

Look for an eye mask that has breathable fabric and adjustable straps so it fits comfortably. Most eye masks come with a carrying case, which is great for storing them when not in use. For an added bonus, choose one that has a calming scent or an aromatherapy feature. This can help relax your little ones and get them ready for sleep.

4) Earplugs

Earplugs are essential for anyone taking a red-eye flight. They can help drown out the noise of loud passengers and airplane engines, making it easier to rest and sleep on the plane. I like to use earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. Earplugs are less bulky than headphones and can easily be put away in your carry-on bag or pocket when not in use. Make sure to choose a pair of earplugs that is comfortable and offers enough sound dampening to help you block out any unwanted noise.

5) A change of clothes

When taking a red-eye flight, it’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothes. You don’t know how long your trip will be, and it’s best to be prepared for any eventuality.

If you’re taking a long flight, you may want to change into something more comfortable. This will help you stay comfortable and relaxed during the trip. Consider bringing a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt or a light jacket, so that you can adjust to whatever temperature the plane might be.

It’s also important to think about what you might need if your plans change or if your flight gets delayed. It can be helpful to have some extra clothes with you in case of an emergency. This can include an extra shirt, pants, socks, and shoes.

Finally, if you’re traveling with children, it’s wise to pack a few extra items for them too. This could include diapers, wipes, extra snacks, and a spare set of clothes. By packing a change of clothes for your red-eye flight, you can ensure that you and your family stay comfortable and prepared for anything that comes your way!

6) Toiletries

No matter the length of your flight, it's important to bring a few toiletry items with you. Pack a small bag containing items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, and moisturizer. If you are flying with kids, make sure to also pack baby wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, and a change of clothes in case of spills or accidents. If you're feeling fancy, bring along a mini-size bottle of face mist or some aromatherapy oils to freshen up during the flight. And don't forget to bring a garbage bag to help contain any messes that may occur. Finally, if you plan on wearing makeup, remember to bring along some makeup remover wipes for when it's time to hit the pillow.

My favorite travel zipper pouches for toiletries are from Erin Condren. Not only are they great for keeping all your toiletries organized, but they come in a variety of colors and designs. They are also made with durable material that won’t get ruined in the event of any spills or leaks. Make sure to pack your toiletries in an easily accessible spot so you can quickly grab what you need when you need it.

7) Snacks and drinks

No matter how short or long the flight, snacks and drinks are a must for any red-eye flight. Make sure to pack a variety of snacks that will keep you satisfied while in the air. Bring healthy options such as nuts and dried fruit, as well as indulgent treats like chips or cookies. While you will be offered plenty of drinks on the flight, it's wise to bring your own reusable bottles of water or even hot chocolate for the kids. This is especially important if your flight is long, and you need to stay hydrated and alert.
