Women's Solidarity: Music Edition

March has been a month of women's solidarity. We had International Women's Day, and it's new counterpart, A Day Without A Woman. I was not a huge fan of A Day Without A Woman. There are a lot of things about the way that was done that I did not support. But, that is not to say that I do not support equal rights for women. I do stand in solidarity with my sisterhood.

Driving to meet a client the other day, my John Bellion, Pandora Station played several strong and beautiful female artists, and it dawned on me, I have to create a playlist of some of my favorite female artists.

Why this is important...

About 15 years ago, a good friend confessed to me that he listened to No Doubt when he was alone in the car. He confessed!!! He explained to me that it was embarrassing, as a guy, to listen to music performed by women. He went on to say, that he simply did not listen to female artists in the presence of other men.

Now, this was about 15 years ago, if not longer. And this friend was only about 22 years old at the time, so lets cut him some slack. But, I remember thinking how terrible this way of thought is for female artists. Back then, music was mostly still purchased and female musicians were losing out on sales because men were embarrassed to purchase their music and listen to it in front of others. Wow!

That has really stuck with me over the years.

I know not all men feel this way. Still, even if its a small contingent of the male population who does feel this way, what a sad truth it is for us as women.

So, to show solidarity, here is my list of amazing female artists (in no particular order):

Martina Topley - Sanpaper Kisses

Nina Simone - Feeling Good (Bassnectar Remix) (The original is great, but I'm loving this remix)

Arcade Fire - In The Back Seat (She's not usually the vocalist, but this song is amazing)

Bishop Briggs - The Way I Do (Pretty much anything by Bishop Briggs is great)

Lauryn Hill - Ex-Factor

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control

Hey Violet - Guys My Age

Joan Jett - Love Rock N Roll

Bat For Lashes - Strangelove (cover)

K.Flay - Blood In The Cut

Massive Attack - Teardrop

The Sounds - Ego

Portishead - Roads (or anything by Portishead really)

Mazzy Star - Wild Horses (Stones cover)

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

M.I.A. - Bad Girls

The Knife - Lasagna

There are so many more incredible female artists out there, but I dont have hours and hours and hours to put together a comprehensive playlist because... kids!

Enjoy!
